Hello!

I'm Lois Brown, a piano tuner, technician and traditional French polisher based in Berkshire.

My musical journey

My love of music started at Christmas, when older family members would get out their guitars and spend time between meals playing together. I then took up classical guitar aged 7 and never really stopped!

My appreciation of the piano started at age 13, when a friend lent my family a keyboard and I taught myself how to play. It was a lovely instrument, however the low notes on it were never quite as pleasant as the middle and trebles and thus began my obsession with tone.

By the time I was in the third year of my Music degree at Falmouth University, I had spoken to many luthiers around the world about the construction of guitars and used my dissertation as an excuse to take a deep dive into why and how instruments sound the way they do.

After six years of teaching guitar, performing and enjoying the many different types of pianos in the places I got to work, I decided I was still not done with my exploration of tone and instrument construction and enrolled at The Piano Tuner Academy, where I was taught by master tuner Robert King.

At present day, I am fascinated by the unique builds, systems and aesthetics of each piano I get to work with, as well as the items I French polish, all of which come with their own stories.
